Solo and beyond

Solo & Beyond Scheme

First Solo

Our ‘Solo & Beyond’ scheme is probably the most cost effective way to learn to fly.  It is a discounted package designed to help those without previous flying experience progress rapidly through their pre-solo/post-solo training at probably less cost that it takes to learn to drive?  You may take your lessons on any flyable day (generally around 250 each year at Nympsfield), at weekends, weekdays, in summer or winter.  We also run training evenings during the summer months.

You may take your lessons over a short concentrated period (the most effective, efficient  way to learn) or spread them over a year or more to suit yourself, the choice is yours!

Training is given on winch launching AND tow plane launching.  Nympsfield sits on the edge of the Cotswold escarpment enabling extended ‘Ridge Flights’ to be flown.  Longer flight times means accelerated training!  Your progress will be carefully monitored via your logbook and progress card.

The scheme fee must be paid in advance, it is not refundable or transferable and includes:
  • Membership from the date of joining to annual membership renewal date on 1st April. Note membership must be continuous (unbroken) if you wish carry forward any unused quota of flying into the new membership year.
  • 60 winch launches and 7 tow plane launches to 2000ft. The number of launches are set slightly above the average number of launches normally required to go solo.  Although every effort will be made to enable you to fly solo, success is dependent on ability, attendance and motivation.  No guarantee can be given.
  • All soaring time in club two-seater and single-seater gliders; (soaring time has averaged 15 mins per training flight over the last 5 years).
  • All instructors time. (There is no charge for instructors time unless you opt to join dedicated training weeks which may be chargeable).

The new member should operate as a normal club member, assisting (for example) in launch-point activities while flying is in progress.  In particular, the scheme offers no priority over other members. See Costs for tariff or contact the office

Before you can fly solo you will be required to obtain a medical certificate from your doctor.
