Cadet Scheme

The Cadet Scheme

Bristol and Gloucestershire Gliding Club has a very active and successful cadet scheme. The scheme was introduced in the late 90’s to help attract young people into the exiting sport of Gliding. It has now grown into a thriving and important area of our club. Our current cadets agree that gliding on the scheme is a pocket money sport.

 What is the cadet scheme?

  • The Cadet Scheme is open to any person between the ages of 15 and 18 with an interest in learning to fly.
  • Cadet Days - The first Sunday of each month is nominated as a ‘Cadet Day’. Cadets are encouraged to turn up on as many Cadet Days as possible in order to meet other pilots of a similar age and standard.
  • Subsidised membership (see costs
  • Reduced launch and flying costs (instruction is free)
  • The opportunity to attend cadet only instructional week long courses.
  • The chance to meet and possibly fly with some of this countries top pilots.

What does BGGC expect from its cadets?

  • To fly as often as possible, not just on the cadet days.
  • A responsible attitude at all times on the airfield.
  • To follow all BGGC rules.
  • To promote a positive view of gliding to all visitors to the site.
  • Help maintain the clubhouse and airfield.
  • Help out during the annual competition.
  • To introduce more young people to the sport.

How do I become a cadet?*

Contact the office for an application form on 01453 860 342 or download one here, you will then be invited to join an introductory session at the club where you, and your parents, will be taught the basics of being on the airfield.
