Courses at BGGC

IOW from the air
The BGGC run a range of courses from basic to advanced. Course schedules are published each January, you can find more details here or contact the office. An intensive course is an excellent way of  making progress, whatever stage you are at. The courses are run by our highly experienced professional instructing team assisted by some of our top club pilots and take advantage of the excellent soaring potential from Nympsfield. Accommodation is available on-site or at local establishments and Nympsfield position at the edge of the Cotswolds offers a great place for a week away.  To see what happened in last seasons courses look here.

Courses are available to BGGC members and non-members (members have priority).  All flying is at club rates and a course fee is charged to cover instruction. Advanced courses are generally a maximum of 3 Students except where noted.

Course Prospectus

Pre Solo week

Aimed at those without any gliding experience and  "improvers" wanting to progress towards Solo - also great if you've had a long break and are feeling a bit "rusty". Learning to glide is much easier if you have five consecutive days with a dedicated instructor. We can't guarantee to get you solo in the week, but we will make the most of the opportunity to maximise your flying.

Solo to Bronze

The next stage after going solo. The BGA "Bronze" badge forms the basic licence for a glider pilot in the UK. You've enjoyed the experience of flying on your own -  Now the fun really starts – still lots to do to get to the next level.  You could achieve most (all?) of it in a 5 Day course dedicated to the aspiring Bronze Pilot.

Cross-Country Endorsement

This is a two day course and follows on from the Bronze certificate.  A substantial amount of class-room time is involved plus navigation and field selection exercises flown in a two-seater glider.  The object of the course is to thoroughly prepre ou for the actual test flown in a motor glider.  Maximum 2 pilots.

Silver & The 100km Diploma

Bronze in the bag?  Good, well done.  Think you can teach yourself cross-country flying?  Now is the time to get back in a two-seater and receive one to one instruction. Alternate between two-seater and single-seater.  If the weather’s kind (and we try and run this at the right time of year) you’ll be surprised how much you can achieve in this 5 Day course.

Silver to Gold

Have you done a 300Km cross-country flight yet?  They’re much easier if you’ve had some tuition – I promise you.  Limited to three pilots alternating between Dual/Lead & Follow using DG505/LS4.

Sid’s Task week

A sell out in most years.  The DG505 will be reserved for this prestigious event.  An ideal introduction for those looking to enter comps in the future.  A nine day week, book a day or two with an instructor, or/and another day or two to follow in a single-seater.  A fun week.  If you would like to fly with one of our instructors or be a follower please contact the office before hand.  Followers should be Silver C minimum.

Other weeks

Depending on  schedules we aim to run  additional course such see here for details.
